The effect of MitoQ and Qunol Ubiquinol on human muscle mitochondrial function

There is an opportunity to be involved in a study at University of Auckland looking at how different antioxidant supplements effect mitochondrial function. You will be reimbursed $500 in Westfield vouchers for your time.

Testing will involve you coming in fasted (i.e. no food or drink from 10pm the night before) to the Grafton Campus of the University of Auckland (85 Park Road) for four 1.5 hour visits. You will be ask to take either the antioxidant supplement MitoQ or Qunol Ubiquinol for 6 weeks, then following a 6 week break they you will be supplemented again with either MitoQ or Qunol Ubiquinol for a further 6 weeks. During these visits the following tests will be completed:

  • Urine test
  • Blood test
  • Strength test
  • Muscle biopsy: a sample of your thigh muscle will be taken

Eligibility criteria:

  • Male
  • 40-60 years
  • BMI <32
  • Free of chronic illness such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes and myopathy
  • Untrained or recreationally active
  • Not taking any antioxidant supplements within the previous 2 months
